The Star of the Sea School

Star of the Sea is the oldest School in the Southern Peninsula. The school was built by Italian stonemasons who had been working at Simonstown docks, to shape the rocks hewn from the mountainside into the beautiful building we have today. The school was opened in 1908 and five Dominican Sisters from Springfield Convent in Wynberg came to run it. Numbers attending the school grew quickly and reached 100 pupils by 1914. In 1981 the senior school was closed, but from 1987 boys were permitted in the junior as well as senior primary. Today the school has two classes per grade. The sisters no longer teach at Star but the Catholic, but they have left the laity the legacy of their faith. Celebration of the Mass, prayer and religious instruction are central to life at the school.
