Boardsailing/Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in South Africa
South African holiday destinations present some of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing opportunities in the world. There are a number of good spots all along the coast but Langebaan, near Cape Town, is fast becoming an international boardsailing and kitesurfing mecca.
Many very competitive sailors from Europe and the USA spend anything from a few weeks to a month here at a time, honing their skills in perfect conditions.
Beginners can sign up for a kitesurfing course. After learning the ground handling, you'll use the kite like a sail to move yourself across the water. Once you've got the hang of that, you can move the kite into 'lift' position and fly high above the waves.
There are many excellent beaches to visit for avid kitesurfers. Whatever your level, there is a spot to suit you, from flat shallow waters to awesome big wave spots. It isn't actually that easy, but it's worth learning and at Langebaan you'll get the chance to watch some of the world's top kitesurfers strutting their stuff.
Probably the most exhilarating windsurfing spots to visit on a South African holiday are in Scarborough and Kommetjie area. Langebaan is also a great area for windsurfing, as wind comes up almost every afternoon.
