Cricket in South Africa
Cricket is a gentlemen's sport and many South Africans are avid supporters of the game. The Proteas which are South Africa's national cricket team have made quite an impact in the international arena. Excellent fielders, superb batsmen and good bowlers have definitely made the Proteas a team to be reckoned with.
Cricket is big in South Africa with almost every school fielding a team and a good ground in even the smallest town. International test matches are held here regularly with the main venues being in Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg, although tests are also held in Bloemfontein, East London and occasionally smaller centres.
Did you know that South Africa was the venue of the 2003 Cricket World Cup? Fans of cricket on a South African holiday can look forward to watching the Supersport Series and the Standard Bank Cup when cricketing season rolls around in South Africa.
The Supersport Series is the inter-provincial 4 day cricket competition and is quite exciting to watch. The Standard Bank Cup on the other hand is a limited-overs game played under lights and remains the top drawcard in South African provincial cricket.
