Sailing in South Africa
South Africa is not an ideal destination for a bareboat sailing holiday, as the weather and ocean conditions can be quite extreme but there are a few places where visitors could charter a boat. Keen young sailors could hang around the yacht clubs in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban in the same way that 'yotties' hang around yacht clubs anywhere else in the world.
In many parts of the world, it is essential to have a formal qualification in order to sail a dinghy (e.g. a Hobie cat) offshore, and the process of obtaining such qualification can be expensive. For Those on a South African holiday, the favourable exchange rate (for many) allows for inexpensive dinghy sailing courses, which can be combined with a general holiday.
Of course, offshore sailing also requires certification, and there are recognised ocean sailing training organisations in Cape Town and Durban, where you could obtain your coastal or offshore qualifications at excellent prices.
