George, Western Cape, South Africa
George is a centrally located town, situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth along the spectacular Garden Route. George is the ideal base from which to explore the area, as well as the many diverse scenic wonders of the Garden Route.
George is the capital of the Garden Route, the largest urban centre and the only city. It is; however, not along the coast like Plettenberg Bay or Knysna. George is a golfer's dream destination. The George Golf Club, which has consistently been on the list of the top 10 golf courses in South Africa, is found here, as well as the Fancourte Estate.
Golf aside, George is also home to an attractive cathedral and a museum. The museum houses a wonderful collection of fairy paintings that draws inspiration from the surrounding scenery.
The closest beach to George is Victoria Bay, a charming and beautiful little beach nestled against the mountain. Here visitors can fish, bathe or sun tan whilst taking in your incredible surroundings.
George is the major accommodation centre of the Garden Route and houses a vast range of facilities to suit every need, requirement, taste and budget. There are also many historical landmarks in George.
George is also home to the main airport of the Garden Route, with regular scheduled flights to Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. This airport connects visitors to all main centres in South Africa and main roads and rail link with the Klein Karoo hinterland.
