Hogsback, Eastern Cape, South Africa
For a quiet retreat, where all you can hear is the sound of birds tweeting, Hogsback is the place to be. Hogsback is set high on the Amatola Mountains and surrounded by very old Afro-montane forests. Look up towards the mountains and you will witness some breathtaking waterfalls.
In a different direction you will see the Tyume valley. From the top of Gaika's Kop (1700 metres) you are afforded the most stunning views. Other activities available in Hogsback include walking, mountain biking, horse riding, bird watching, trout fishing and mountain climbing.
Avid bird watchers will have an enjoyable time looking out for the Cape Parrot. These birds are quite rare as there are only 300 of them left in the world. Visitors can also simply relax, enjoy a massage, some reflexology, or just read a book.
The walks through Hogsback are wonderful, with deep forests, trickling mountain streams and dramatic waterfalls. Hogsback is an easy drive, and situated about an hour and a half from East London. It is also very close to the Fort Hare campus at Alice.
