Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Johannesburg city.

If Cape Town is the heart of South Africa, then Johannesburg is the pulse. It is the major international gateway into South Africa and is a vibrant and dynamic place. Feel the energy and listen is to the rhythmic heartbeat of Africa as you journey though this world class city. Johannesburg goes by many names - Egoli, meaning place of gold, Jozi, Joburg and Joey's. Here everyone is one the move, a stark contrast from the more laid back and chilled atmosphere of Cape Town.

Johannesburg is an urban jungle centered on business and making money. Johannesburg is the business and commercial heart of South Africa and offers its own unique charm and energy. It is the de facto capital of Africa and people from all over the continent have made it their home, as it offers more job opportunities and a better, more stable way of life.

However, Joburg is not just about business. It is home to an interesting array of nightlife venues, theatres, restaurants, movie houses, cafes and nightclubs. The Civic Centre and Newtown Cultural Project are interesting places to note. Many businesses, major corporations and head offices have moved to the northern suburbs and Midrand, and away from the city centre. Midrand is a growing industrial, commercial, semi-agricultural and residential area that is situated halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

There is so much to do in Johannesburg. A must do and see is an escorted tour of Soweto. This is a mind-blowing experience, showing how this resilient community contributed to South Africa's struggle for liberation and freedom. Another exciting experience is Gold Reef City, which offers a fun for the whole family. it offers a myriad of amusement rides and a reconstructed mining village, and is alot more authentic than most amusement parks.

Exploring the gold mines at Gold Reef City is a real eye-opener, but nothing really compared to the Apartheid Museum, a mesmerizing historical and cultural experience of note. For a different experience altogether, witness sheer poetry in motion from a performance by the Lipizzaner horses on Sunday mornings. Johannesburg is also home to some fabulous golf courses for all levels and handicaps.
