McGregor, Western Cape, South Africa
McGregor is a small town that has become quite busy in the last few years. It is a great stopover where guests can take a break within easy driving distance. The nearest large city is Cape Town, which is only 200 kilometres away. Architecturally, it is a fascinating place and considered to be the best preserved example of a 19th Century Cape Town.
There is a number of wineries close by, as well as the Breede River 'wine route' adventure rafting and the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve. There is also a lovely overnight hike from Greyton, on the other side of the Riviersonderend Mountains.
This is a tranquil place, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Stroll along the wonderful trails in the nature reserve and watch the birds play in the hides. Relish a delicious meal at one of the restaurants, enjoy a friendly chat at a coffee shop, or indulge in an aromatherapy massage.
McGregor has a mild climate, making it one of the most pleasant places to spend a vacation. The summer days are dry and balmy and the winter is fresh and charming. The village gets its water straight from the natural source up in the mountains. Rivers are being cleared of alien vegetation and facilities upgraded on. Once this project is complete, McGregor should have an adequate water supply for the next 20 years.
