Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Port Alfred is also known as Kowie River and was once a commercial port. This was a long time ago and today, nothing larger than a ski boat has attempted the rather tricky river mouth launch.
Port Alfred is a lovely little town, and home to a great golf course, wonderful surf and good diving opportunities. Guests can participate in a gentle 2 day canoe trail, which takes advantage of the tidal nature of the Kowie River. The beach is long and deserted, so guests can enjoy some privacy as you stroll down the endless miles of beach front.
A full time flying school is operated from a disused military air base, and offers a range of courses. There a also a few wonderful nature reserves and tranquil rivers, forming safe bathing and boating. Port Alfred is a popular family holiday destination, offering lots of exciting things for kids to do.
Port Alfred is situated about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Grahamstown (which is on the N1). It is almost midway between Port Elizabeth and East London on the coastal R72. There is an airfield in Port Alfred; however, the nearest airport is in Port Elizabeth or East London.
